Chroma-key or 'green-screen' technology is the trick you've seen weather forecasters use to display weather maps. The technology replaces a solid-color background with another video or graphic. Five or ten years ago, chroma-keying was too difficult or expensive for home-video enthusiasts, but now it's pretty common. Even entry-level consumer video products can often do the trick for you pretty easily.

For example, Adobe Premiere Elements 7 automatically detects whether a clip has a suitable background as soon as you add that clip to the timeline, and it asks if you want to apply a Video Merge—that's Adobe's name for its automatic chroma-key feature. If you click Yes in the Video Merge dialog box, Premiere Elements makes the background transparent. Then you can put your background graphic on a lower timeline than the 'green-screen' footage to combine the two shots. Professionals usually set up a chroma-key shot by painting an entire wall blue or green so that it fills the frame behind the subject, to simplify the process of merging the shot with its simulated background. That approach isn't always practical when you're shooting at home. To complicate the issue, you generally need to be sure that your subject is far enough away from the colored wall to avoid casting shadows on the background. That means you need an even larger colored background to fill the frame because the distance from the camera to the background needs to be that much greater.

If you shoot at home and you'd rather not violate your lease or strain your marriage by painting your entire home bright green, you can take advantage of video effects to cut out the parts of the frame that don't have your chosen background color. You can create that effect with a feature called a garbage matte in Premiere Elements, or a slightly different technique called masking in Sony Vegas. That way you can just hang a green cloth that doesn't take up the whole background and eliminate the parts of the background beyond the cloth.

The garbage matte approach in Premiere Elements allows you a choice between mattes with four, eight, or sixteen points. By adjusting the location of the points in the matte, you can remove parts of the frame that you don't want seen. For this example, I used an eight-point garbage matte, then dragged the eight vertices of the matte into position to cut out most of the frame surrounding my image, with a little bit of extra space to allow for movement.

I began by right-clicking each clip, choosing Video Event FX, then clicking Sony Chroma Keyer and adjusting the settings until I got the look I wanted. Vegas does not apply the chroma-key feature automatically, as Adobe Elements does, but it offers far more detailed control to help you adjust to variations in background color or lighting that are appropriate to your project.

Your projects may be less complex than this one, but the ideas are the same. By using chroma-key tools with judicious masking, you can take your videos out of 'Wayne's World' and put them in a setting that better fits what you're trying to say.
