The Hull Identification Number, or HIN for short, is a 12 or 15 character number that uniquely identifies the boat. All boats manufactured or imported into the US on or after November 1, 1972 should have a HIN, including fishing boats, power boats, sail boats, PWCs (i.e. Is there a site where I can search (lookup) the hull/serial number of a boat I just was given for free?   • In order to validate or verify a HIN, you must understand and recognize the formats.
  • Again look for and record all serial#’s and HINs found on the boat!
  • Hand engraved HINs on a plastic kayak can be very hard to read. 11 characters check for confidential. If company is in business, you can call company and find out the location of the confidential. This boat was registered as is.
  • Sometimes it’s just best to ask to digital pictures. A Pencil tracing just wouldn’t work.

  • Record all numbers! R&T has to research both numbers in order to obtain all records on this boat. This could be a good potential for fraud if someone has two titles on this boat. One title shows HIN CBC18799 and the other showing serial# 2834018799.

    Built after Nov 1, 1972 and still not a correct format. A OHZ HIN would be assigned to this boat.
  • We know Manufacturers can mess up…but documentation tells us how to fix it or as least how to comment about it in WIS!!! We seen a few 1973 Snarks with this format. We leave the HIN as is and comment WIS the fact that the company stamped the HIN backwards.
  • Through research we can usually find out the missing information.
  • I believe one company bought the other or took over the other and both put HINs on the boat.
  • Inspecting Office didn’t know HIN formats and for that reason didn’t look for a confidential HIN. We have NEVER seen a PWC with a messed up HIN from any of the PWC companies. Kawasaki, Bombardier (Sea Doo) Yamaha, Honda, or Polaris.
