Japan started producing Fenders in the early 80s. In 1984 they made a bass called simply the 'PJ bass' that looked similar to this but without a 3 way switch and some other oddities. In 1985 they started producing the 'Jazz Bass Special' labeled Fender as you can see on the headstock of this. The serial numbers of these started with A for a very short time 1985, just a few months and on the neckplate, then they switched the the serial numbers to E in mid 1985 and put it next to the logo.
Duff Mckagan of GNR fame bought a 1985 Jazz special at the sunset Guitar Center in 1986 when they received there first $10,000 record advance. These Jazz Specials are all he used for 99% of GNR from 1986-1997. He has continued to use these models and with GNR getting back together he has been using them strictly again. In fact Fender produced a Duff signature based on this bass and its made in mexico and costs $1000. Now what makes this one special? well its a original Duff bass a real Japan made one like his, its a 1985 A serial number like his and this one is in pretty decent shape for 31 years old. Duff originally bought 1 Jazz Special in white, by the time they were world wide famous in 1988 he found a few old stock 1985 models and bought them, in black and white totally e had 3 whites and 3 blacks. While the white ones are more iconically associated with him, the all black ones are harder to find. You can see Duff using his all black model in The Dont Cry and Garden of Eden music videos, some live jams with Aerosmith and probably some other videos I just dont remember.
If your not a Duff fan these are still great basses and stands out compared to most Fenders
This is 100% Original besides the metal knobs. All black hardware and neck, very hard to find black back of neck models. Plays great, sounds even better. If you look you can see the pickup pole pieces are larger, the ones in 1987 switched to small poles and sound way different.
The bass is a 7/10 condition wise, if you factored in the age this is pretty good shape. The neck and frets are super clean. Hardware's black platting its all present. There are some chips around the upper arm area of the bass that were touched up with black paint well. There is a small chip on te front and various dings, dents and scratches, black shows all. The headstock has some chips of paint at the edge and on the E string tuner 1 screw is missing and 1 is not a original one. Any greasy sheen on the fretboard is because I lemon oiled it and put on new slinky strings minutes before taking the photo, the frets are in pretty good shape as well. Bass weighs 9 pounds 3 ounces.
No case
I had a white one in the same condition I sold on reverb for $799 earlier this year, these are getting rare to find, especially original.
